Serious T’ings a Go Happen! is the title of the over 150 pages coffee table book of Jamaican Dancehall Street signs from the Maxine Walters Collection. The book is being released on December 16, 2016 at Redbones Blues Café. A percentage of the profit of the book will be given to the Consie Walters Cancer Care Hospice and St. Josephs Hospital.
The beauty of this book speaks to the creativity of the ordinary Jamaican people. Essays include contributions by 2015 Man Booker Prize winner Marlon James, Vivian Goldman, Carolyn Cooper, Wayne Chen, Anthony Winkler, Micheal “Mikie” Bennett interviewing Rory “Stone Love” and Maxine Walters interviewing sign painter Denva Harris.
Maxine Walter’s father, Constantine Theodore “Consie” Walters was one of Jamaica’s foremost political journalists, and Director of News at TVJ. In 1984, he was diagnosed with terminal colon cancer and was approached to join in establishing the first Cancer Care Hospice in Jamaica. Consie worked relentlessly on this project and the Hospice located on the grounds of the St. Josephs Hospital in Kingston Jamaica, opened its doors to the public shortly after his death. In recognition of his work, the hospice was named for him, and our family has proudly supported the “The Consie Walters Cancer Care Hospice” since it’s inception.
